GENOA – The Genoa Police Department raised $8,016 for No-Shave November.
The police officers were clean-shaven free-of-charge at Herron & Co. Barbers in Genoa at the beginning of November and didn’t shave all month. Even the K-9 Kane got in on the campaign.
No-Shave November is a web-based, nonprofit organization devoted to growing cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, research and education.
The department’s original goal was $2,500, which was met within 72 hours.
Their second goal of $5,000 was met in less than three weeks. The final goal of $7,000 was met and surpassed by the end of the month.
“I don’t think anybody thought we’d make the first goal, but the response from the community and our friends and family was fantastic,” said part-time officer Robert Barnett. “We want to thank everyone who donated and participated, helping us raise money to one day end cancer.”
Now that the month is over, Barnett said most of the officers have decided to keep their beards and facial hair.
“It was a great experience for all of us, it bonded us all together for a common cause,” Barnett said. “Now that the month is over, we don’t want to stop because it’s a great cause. I wish we had ‘No-Shave’ every month, not just November.”
