The Kishwaukee Valley Art League recently received a grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation to aid in the start-up of its Gallery on State. The Community Needs Grant will be used to help cover the expenses for equipment and supplies to prepare the building as a community art gallery.
KVAL board members Rich Born and Matt Cabrera prepared the grant application.
“An art gallery to serve the residents of DeKalb County has been a goal of ours and is finally a reality," Born said in a news release. "Thank you to the donors whose generosity has made this grant possible.”
The community goundation distributes more than $100,000 to various 501(c)3 organizations every spring and fall. This grant is intended to “encourage programs and projects that enhance cooperation and collaboration among organizations within DeKalb County.”
“We're grateful to the DeKalb County Community Foundation for their support and will continue in our mission to support the growing community of artists here in DeKalb County,” Cabrera said in the release.
The Kishwaukee Valley Art League took possession of the building at 322 W. State St. in Sycamore on Sept. 1, and a number of members began cleaning, painting, installing a hanging/lighting system for artwork, and rerouting some plumbing to get the building ready to open. The gallery opened Oct. 15 and has business hours Tuesdays through Saturdays.
“We've been working for five or six years trying to raise money for our own art gallery, our own location, and the grant money from the Community Foundation will certainly help us with our goal,” KVAL president Larry Bond said in the release.
The gallery will not only provide an outlet for KVAL members to display and sell their artwork, but the league will have a place to hold its monthly meetings and board meetings as well as a location to hold its Affordable Art Show and its Holiday Arts and Crafts Market, which is scheduled for Nov. 21. That date also is the gallery's Grand Opening. In addition, the league plans to offer art classes and other special events at the gallery.
