DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department is warning residents about an unemployment scam that has been affecting residents across the state.
According to a news release, the scam involves using individuals’ identities to file for unemployment insurance and then receive unemployment debit cards in the mail. However, if you receive an unsolicited debit card in the mail, you should not activate it, police said.
If a resident receives a debit card or an unemployment insurance letter in the mail and they did not file for unemployment, they should not activate the cards and should check their credit report for suspicious activity.
Individuals should also file a police report and call the Illinois Department of Employment Security at 800-814-0513 to report receiving the unsolicited card. Reports also can be filed through the IDES website, www2.illinois.gov.
