The DeKalb County History Center is offering a seven-week virtual genealogy class beginning Sept. 22.

Genealogy can mean different things to different people. Some are very practical with a focus on names along with birth, marriage and death dates, while others search to get to know their past relatives as they try to discover interesting stories.

The DeKalb County History Center is offering a virtual genealogy class to help you answer these questions and more.

For many historical societies and research libraries genealogy is the most common reason for visiting. Through this research, you can validate family stories, find out if you are related to someone famous, better understand your family traditions, reconnect with other family members and even satisfy your curiosity – while sometimes creating new questions.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, Julie Dresser will lead a seven-week class that will provide hints, tips and tricks for genealogists.

Dresser started as a genealogist at age 11, and has never lost her passion. Now she is sharing her knowledge with those interested in starting genealogy or those who want to brush up their skills.

The seven weeks of topics will include 1) Introduction and home sources; 2) Birth, marriage and death records; 3) Census records; 4) Immigration records; 5) Military/court records; 6) Local and national repositories; and 7) Writing a family history. She will provide many personal examples during the class, and it is open to all ages.

Previous attendees have found the classes interesting, informative and well organized.

“Julie does a great job teaching,” Michelle Donahoe, history center executive director, said in a news release. “The feedback is consistently positive from people just beginning their journey in genealogy to those who worked on it for years. ”

The class will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays starting Sept. 22. Registration is required, and there is limited space available. There is a $25 charge, which will cover all seven weeks and a series of handouts for each class.
