DeKALB – Colby A. Royer, a DeKalb High School graduate, is the 2020 recipient of the Christopher Anderson Memorial Scholarship, according to a news release.

The $1,500 scholarship is awarded each year by Christopher’s family to a senior DHS soccer player who is a good student and exemplifies the spirit, teamwork, sportsmanship and enthusiasm for soccer that Christopher demonstrated.

Royer played for DHS all four years, was varsity captain and junior varsity captain and was named an NIBXII and DuPage Valley Academic All-Conference Honoree.

“He has been an outstanding ambassador for the boys’ soccer program over the past four years,” Coach PJ Hamilton said in a news release. “He has represented the program in the highest regards through his display of commitment, work ethic, leadership and love of the game. He is a selfless player and is always willing to put the team’s best interests above his own.”

Hamilton said during Royer’s senior year, he achieved another Barb Cup Championship, a 3A Regional Championship and was selected as team captain by his teammates and coaching staff.

Hamilton said Royer’s achievements extend to the classroom, too, with an overall GPA of 4.511. He also is a member of the National Honor Society, and volunteers for peer tutoring, all while working a job at Hy-Vee.

“Colby does a great job balancing the demands of life while being an outstanding young man,” Hamilton said in the release.

Royer plans to pursue a career in petroleum engineering.

The scholarship was created in 2000 by the Anderson family in memory of their son and brother who was killed in a car accident on July 18, 1999, at the age of 16. The scholarship fund has grown each year through contributions made by his family and friends in the DeKalb community and is managed by the DeKalb County Community Foundation.
