Four local women – Linda Slabon, Toni Tollerud, Diane Johns and Carey Boehmer – recently hosted a plant giveaway that raised $2,500 for DeKalb County Community Gardens.

Referring to themselves as “gardener grandmas,” they excavated and transferred more than 200 pots, buckets and fairy gardens from Slabon's and Tollerud's private garden in DeKalb.

Over the three-day event, a wide variety of plants were available for donation including succulents, irises, hostas, pink yarrow, spiderwort, sedum, snake plants and variegated liriope.

Slabon said about 100 people attended and several volunteered to help next year.

The gardener grandmas are hoping to conduct a plant giveaway again next year with more local home gardeners contributing plants to the giveaway for a freewill donation.
