TubaChristmas part of worldwide tradition

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University tuba professor Scott Tegge and his studio of 14 tuba and euphonium players will perform holiday music in the gallery at NIU's Founders Memorial Library.

TubaChristmas will be from 11 a.m. to noon Dec. 3. Tegge will talk about the tuba and its history, and cookies will be served.

This year is the 46th anniversary for TubaChristmas concerts and events, which are presented around the world.

TubaChristmas was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips, an American tuba player and professor at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, as a tribute to his teacher and mentor, William J. Bell, who was born on Christmas Day, 1902.

The first TubaChristmas was conducted by Paul Lavalle on Dec. 22, 1974, at the Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink in New York City.
