Police offer ‘Lock it or Lose it’ tips to prevent auto burglaries

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Police Department is encouraging drivers to lock their car doors as a part of “Lock it or Lose it” week.

Officers typically see an increase in thefts from motor vehicles during the summer months, according to a Sycamore Police news release. An overwhelming majority of these thefts are from unlocked vehicles.

Police offered a few ways drivers can help prevent auto burglaries: Don’t leave your valuables in your vehicle; lock your vehicle’s doors, even if you only plan to be gone for a brief time; do not store valuables in your vehicle any longer than necessary, and never overnight; if you must leave items of value in your vehicle, place the items in the trunk or out of sight; and lock your vehicle’s doors even if the vehicle is parked inside a garage.

The department will post reminders asking the public to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables throughout the summer. Get updates on Twitter @SycamorePolice, on Facebook at Sycamore Police Department and on Instagram at sycamorepolice.
