The community is invited to celebrate Independence Day at the DeKalb Municipal Band’s annual “A Star Spangled Spectacular” concert. The band, directed by Kirk Lundbeck, will perform at 8 p.m. July 4 at the Dee Palmer Band Shell in Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

Vocalist Karen Manley Kahler will join the festivities. She will sing “The Man I Love,” “Some People” and “God Bless the U.S.A.”

Kahler resides in Belvidere and performs in the Rockford area and can frequently be seen on stage at the Starlight Theatre. This summer at Starlight, she is playing Donna in “Mamma Mia’ running in June and July. Some of her all-time favorite roles include Eve in “Children of Eden,” Gertrude in “Seussical the Musical,” Mother in “Ragtime” and Lily in “Secret Garden.” Kahler earned a degree in music theater from Illinois Wesleyan University and is thrilled to be able to do what she truly loves once in a while.

Kahler works for her family’s car dealership, Manley’s Belvidere Ford Lincoln, where she coordinates efforts to raise money for nonprofit organizations and schools through “Drive Events” sponsored by Ford and Lincoln. She also serves as music director at First Presbyterian Church in Belvidere.

Other musical selections on the July 4 program include “Always United, Always Forever,” American Big Top,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “The National Game,” “Overture to 1812,” “Semper Fidelis,” “Civil War Reflections,” “Commando March,” “Hymn to the Fallen,” “New Armed Forces Medley,” “America the Beautiful” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

Concert admission is free; donations to the “Help the Band Play On” fund drive will be accepted. Bench seating is available or bring a lawn chair or blanket.

As this is the Fourth of July celebration, residents are invited to attend rehearsals at 7:30 p.m. July 3 at the band shell. There will not be a concert on Tuesday, July 2.
