DeKalb police warn residents about rise in vehicle burglaries

DeKALB – The DeKalb Police Department is issuing a community alert warning residents that warmer weather could mean more vehicle burglaries.

According to a news release from the department, DeKalb police have investigated a number of vehicle break-ins over the past couple of weeks and are giving residents some tips on how to avoid them. More foot traffic to residential and downtown areas could lure potential problems.

Police recommend locking your car, even when it’s in your driveway, don’t leave electronic devices, wallets, purses, cash, or keys visible from outside your car. Keep some lights on outside your home after dark, and if you see something, say something.

Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activity to the DeKalb Police Department by calling 815-748-8400 or calling Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272. Text ALERTDEKALB to 67282 to provide an anonymous tip.
