MidWeek Reporter Katrina Milton met with Christine Lagattolla, assistant director of NIU Outdoor Adventures, to talk about the program and upcoming used gear sale.

Milton: What is NIU Outdoor Adventures?

Lagattolla: We are a resource and a service to the community. You can rent and learn about new outdoor equipment. You can rent mountain bikes, snowboards, tents, ice skates, roller blades. We can show you how to use a stove and cook outdoors or set up a tent.

Milton: What other programs does NIU Outdoor Adventures do?

Lagattolla: In addition to rentals, we take trips throughout the year. We’re hosting a hike and camp in Acadia National Park and the Adirondack Mountains from May 13 to May 24. Organizations, companies, businesses or churches can contact us to do local outdoor activities like canoeing or have a teambuilding camping trip. We want to be involved in the community as an outreach. We truly want to be a part of the communiversity and stay connected with alumni.

Milton: Why host a used gear sale?

Lagattolla: Our last sale was around 2000, and it’s been our intention of having another big sale. We’ve been holding onto items specifically for a sale. We wanted to hold a community event, open to the public. We hope to hold a sale like this every year.

Milton: What are some of the items that are for sale?

Lagattolla: We’ll have more than 600 items: watercrafts, kayaks, canoes, whitewater equipment like kayaks, wetsuits and paddles, tents, sleeping bags, rain gear, offshore fishing jackets and bibs. You wouldn’t find some of these items in local stores. A lot of gear was purchased in 1998 and kept in boxes, a lot of it is new. We held on to some of these items because we wanted to have a sale.

Milton: Where will the sale be held?

Lagattolla: The sale will be held inside the Recreation Center. The boats will be outside, but the other items will be laid out in the basketball courts. It is an as-is sale, and people can open up and inspect tents. There will be staff on hand to help and answer questions. We’ll have tags on the items, that if you pull the tag, it’s yours. There will also be a silent auction for some of our newer, more expensive equipment like a Mad River racing canoe.

Milton: How will the sale’s proceeds be used?

Lagattolla: Proceeds from the event will help support students going on trips with NIU Outdoor Adventures. We also host a lot of free events for students and the community, like an upcoming night hike with the park district. The money we would be using to purchase new equipment would be used for other things, like community events. One of our main goals is awareness. A lot of people don’t know who we are or that we’re here, open to the community. Our hope by holding the sale, is that by purchasing these items will help get people outdoors at a lower cost.
