In true holiday spirit, Stephen Feides wanted to help anyway he could.

When his church, the Kirkland Faith World Outreach, decided to hold its fifth annual live nativity scene as part of “Christmas in Kirkland” last Saturday morning, they needed someone to play the role of Joseph, so the Rockford man volunteered.

As it turned out, he was a rather appropriate choice since he and the young woman playing Mary, Esther Weiss, had gotten engaged a few days earlier.

The nativity scene was just one of many attractions at the annual event.

Other activities, which were held at Alpine Bank branch, included a visit with Santa, a puppet show, a display of Hiawatha Elementary School’s art and essay contest, and numerous holiday goodies.

A Christmas breakfast, with proceeds benefiting the Dennis Myelle family, was also held at the United Methodist Church. That event included Santa’s Workshop, during which youngsters were able to make paper Christmas trees and other crafts.
