SYCAMORE – An art show to honor the memory of a local artist is planned for May 16.

MALTA – The Malta Lions Club will hold its annual Rose Day from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11.

National Employee Health & Fitness Day has been extended to a month-long initiative in an effort to generate sustainable healthy lifestyles. In honor of National Employee Health and Fitness Month, Live Healthy DeKalb County is inviting employers and employees in DeKalb County to participate in a number of free events during the month of May.

DeKALB – Bethany Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, 3298 Resource Parkway in DeKalb, will observe Nursing Home Week with a series of events May 12-17.

DeKALB – Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists will begin its next session of balance classes the week of May 13.

GENOA – Downtown Genoa’s reputation as a good place for entrepreneurs was furthered at the end of April when an expert from the Small Business Development Center at Waubonsee Community College paid a visit.  Marcelo Alvarez was invited by Genoa Main Street to spend the day in town.

DeKALB – Ideal Industries employees and their corporate sponsors are projected to raise more than $12,000 in support of Junior Achievement at this year’s Bowl-a-thon. Other local businesses will participate and be part of this fundraising and friend-making event as well. The Bowl-a-thon will be held at the Mardi Gras Bowling Lanes at 1730 Sycamore Road in DeKalb at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9.

CHICAGO – John Rung was named president of Shaw Media and elected to its Board of Directors at the company’s annual meeting May 2.

GENOA – After a record number of vendors applied to be part of Genoa Main Street’s Open Air Markets last year, the organization has widened the boundaries of the market to include an adjacent block.

DeKALB – Todd Vanatta, physical therapist at Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists, recently attended a course in Raleigh, N.C. on Visceral Functional Mobilization. This three-day, lab-intensive course focused on gaining mobility of all structures through the abdomen and pelvis to improve performance of everyday tasks or activities such as lifting, bending and breathing.

DeKALB – Northern Illinois University has named Dan Gebo in anthropology, Paul Kelter in literacy education and Zhili Xiao in physics as its 2013 Board of Trustees Professors – a top university honor that recognizes faculty members for international renown in their research and excellence in all facets of teaching.
