DeKalb man wins songwriting awards

Gary Mullis of DeKalb recently won several awards for songs he entered in the Northwest Alabama Music Publishing Company’s Song Contest.

Mullis won first place sponsorship and received a Platinum Record award for his Christmas song, “Hallelujah Christmas.” Kimberley Glover will record the song on her Christmas CD.

He also won first place for his song, “Rolling Down the Road,” a truck-driving song. He received free studio time to record his song on 25 CDs and won an Elvis Presley mug set.

Mullis also won a publishing contract for his new book titled, “Gary Mullis From the Farm to the VIP Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.” Four copies of the book were printed. One copy will go into his glass showcase in the VIP Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in Lexington, Alabama, and another copy will go to the DeKalb Public Library.

A plaque recognizing Mullis’ lifetime of community service also was awarded. December 2019 will mark 50 years of his Toys for Tots Toy Drive. He also won a free trip to the Grand Ole Opry Plaza Party and Nashville Nightlife Dinner Theater concert and $120 in cash for meals.
