University of Illinois Extension’s Camp Russell, in partnership with DeKalb County Forest Preserve District, offers nature-based camps for ages 7 to 11. Camp Russell is located at the Natural Resource Education Center in Russell Woods Forest Preserve, one mile west of Genoa on Route 72.
The camps are thematic week-long day camps with choices for 7- to 9-year-olds and 9- to 11-year-olds. Camp lessons start at 9 a.m. daily and end at 3 p.m.
Naturalist Adventures, for ages 9-11, will be held the week of June 10. Campers will look at different aspects of nature including many of the sciences, as well as games that help teach the concepts and guest speakers.
Ages 7-9 can attend the following camps: Incredible Insects starting June 17, Birds of Prey starting June 24, and Endangered Species starting July 8. Campers will enjoy hikes, games, crafts, guest speakers and lots of outdoor fun.
Rockin’ in the River, for ages 9-11, will be held the week of July 29. It is dedicated to the Kishwaukee River and the life teaming in and around it. Campers will study a different aspect of the river each day as they do field work and collect data.
