The Sycamore Lions and the Sycamore Park District will sponsor the 23rd annual Cookies with Santa event from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 7 and 9 a.m. to noon Dec. 8 at the Sycamore Community Center, 480 Airport Road.
In conjunction with the event, the Lions will offer free vision pre-screenings for children ages 6 months to 6 years.
More than 12 million school-age children in the US have some form of vision problem, yet only one in three have received eye care services before age 6, according to a news release. Many vision problems run the risk of becoming permanent if not corrected by age 7, when the eye reaches full maturity.
Vision also plays an important role in education. According to educational experts, 80 percent of learning is visual. Early screening leads to early detection, which helps ensure that children get the follow-up care they need.
