'Storybook Ballet' coming to the Egyptian

The Beth Fowler Dance Company of Genoa and St. Charles will present an original dance production “A Storybook Ballet” March 16 through 18 at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb. The ballet will bring to life the stories of Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.

The story takes place in the bedroom of a young girl named Marie, portrayed by Alyssa Vicary of Genoa, where the fairy tales come alive in her dreams.

Beth Fowler envisioned the concept of the giant growing storybook that would allow the characters to emerge from the pages to tell their stories. She then contacted set designer Sahin Sahinoglu at Northern Illinois University, who had worked with her on previous company ballets. He and his assistants created the 10-by-12 foot book, including hidden doors in each of the pages. He also created the elaborate scenery and set decorations for the enchanting stories.

As the story proceeds, Marie’s bedroom is transformed into various scenes. Snow White’s forest scene, the undersea background for the Little Mermaid characters, Aladdin’s story featuring a flying carpet, and the Castle of the Beast with its enchanted household.

Featured in Snow White is Jennifer Flatland of Hampshire in the title role, Lydia Carpenter of Sycamore as the Evil Queen and Larry Pool of Rockford as the Prince.

Ariel, the Little Mermaid, is performed by Becky Baert of Genoa. Ursula is Lindsey Haugen of St. Charles, Prince Eric is Wade Tischhauser of Chicago and King Triton is Phil Masterton of Rockford.

Aladdin performances include Jacob Bliujus of Sycamore in the title role, Taryn Sarto of Genoa as Jasmine, and Lydia Jacobson of DeKalb as the Genie.

Performing in Beauty and the Beast are Lindsey Haugen as Belle, Larry Pool of Rockford as the Beast, Wade Tischhauser as Gaston, Becky Baert as the Enchantress, Brandon Fowler of Cortland as the Prince, Jacob Bliujus as Lumiere, Abby Lewis of St. Charles as Cogsworth, Anne Fritsch of West Chicago as Babette, Kaitlyn Rollo of South Elgin as Mrs. Potts, and Brooke Baurer of Geneva as Chip.

Familiar Disney songs will delight audiences of all ages. Assisting Beth Fowler as rehearsal faculty are Brooke Fowler, Allix Sester and Lydia Carpenter. Madlyn Steffey is the costume coordinator.
