Families invited to explore camp options at 2018 summer camp fair

DeKALB – Parents and students are invited to explore summer camp offerings in the DeKalb/Sycamore area at the 2018 Summer Camp Fair. The fair will take place at DeKalb High School from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15.

The fair is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.

The Summer Camp Fair will give families a chance to meet with representatives from a wide variety of camps, including the YMCA, Northern Illinois University and Illinois Extension Programs. Summer camps are available for children and youth from pre-school through high school and include both day and overnight camps.

“The main objective is for parents and families to have access under one roof to the various summer camp opportunities available in our community,” fair organizer Susana Das Neves said in a news release. “They will learn of the opportunities students have in the summer to be active by participating in a camp that meets their interests and hobbies.”

Information about scholarships and other funding options will also be available.

“Parents will gain access to information and available resources to offset the cost of summer camps and be able to make informed decisions,” Das Neves said in the release.

The 2018 Summer Camp Fair is sponsored by Parent University (Universidad Para Padres), a community outreach project sponsored by the Northern Illinois Regional P-20 Network and housed at NIU’s Center for P-20 Engagement. Das Neves is the coordinator of Parent University.

“At our first spring class, parents asked about summer camps, and they eventually decided to designate a full class session to a summer camp fair,” she said in the release.

The Parent University participants decided to open the fair to all families in the area to share this excellent resource with the wider community.

“This is a communiversity effort,” Das Neves said in the release, “and I am very thankful to have the support of the DeKalb and Sycamore school districts, in addition to the various NIU departments and community organizations offering summer camps.”

Organizations interested in participating in the 2018 Summer Camp Fair should contact Susana DasNeves at parentuniversity@niu.edu.
