DeKALB – The third movie in the "Maze Runner" series, "Death Cure," will be released on Jan. 26. Area teens are invited to the DeKalb Public Library on Thursday to watch the first movie, "The Maze Runner," at noon, followed by the second movie, "Scorch Trials," at 2:30 p.m.
This early-release-day activity will include "Maze Runner" trivia, survival skill challenges, free giveaways and popcorn provided by The Friends of DeKalb Public Library.
This free program is intended for ages 11 and older, or younger if accompanied by an adult. It will be held in the Teen Room.
Going on simultaneously, in front of the library’s Haish fireplace, will be the Teen Genre Book Club. This month, teens will discuss "Orbiting Jupiter," by Gary D. Schmidt. It is the story of Joseph, a father at 13, who has never seen his daughter, Jupiter. After spending time in a juvenile facility, he’s placed with a foster family on a farm in rural Maine. Here Joseph, damaged and withdrawn, meets 12-year-old Jack, who narrates the account of the troubled, passionate teen who wants to find his baby at any cost. In this riveting novel, two boys discover the true meaning of family and the sacrifices it requires.
Teens can pick up a copy of the book in the Teen Room today. During the book club meeting, teens will share how this book made them feel about teen pregnancy, bullying, grief and friendship. Teens do not need to have read the book to attend.
This free program is intended for teens in grades 6 through 12. Registration is not required.
Also on the same day, tweens in grades 6 through 8 can come to the first Middle School TAG meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the Bilder Family Meeting Room. TAG is about local teens talking to librarians, discussing and deciding which materials, books, programs and services they need.
TAG members are the first to learn about volunteer opportunities at the library. Attend regularly and earn service credit for school. Bring your ideas, energy and enthusiasm. High School TAG will continue to meet on the fourth Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
