Kishwaukee College is once again hosting A Celebration of Dance, a free evening of Hispanic dance performances by three local dance troupes. A Celebration of Dance will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 12 in A1273 in the Kishwaukee College Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.

The participating dance troupes include Ballet Nueva Imagin, Rayitos del Sol and Ballet Folklorico Xochiquetzal. The dance troupes will perform traditional folklore dances from various regions of Mexico. Folklore dance is a unique and colorful celebration of culture and ethnic traditions that reflect a rich and varied regional history.

Ballet Nueva Imagen performs dances based on classic songs from the states of Jalisco, Sinaloa, Veracruz and Michoacan, and also fuses traditional choreography with more contemporary music.

Rayitos del Sol performs traditional dances that represent the states of Jalisco, Veracruz and Sinaloa. The Rayitos del Sol are young people in kindergarten through 12th grade from DeKalb, Sycamore and Genoa.

Ballet Folklorico Xochiquetzal dances traditional dances with a more modern twist including Jalisco, Veracruz, Michocan, Oaxaca, Norteno, Nayarit, Chiapas and others. It’s composed of two smaller groups separated into younger and older students. Most students are from Rochelle but the troupe does include dancers from Dixon and Sycamore.

Kishwaukee College will continue its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on Oct. 17 during the KC volleyball game. The Kougars will play Illinois Valley Community College at 6 p.m. in the gym. During the match, there will be games to play from various Hispanic/Latino cultures and there will food available for purchase from El Sol in Rochelle.
