Husband-and-wife country duo Thompson Square is preparing to take the stage as Sunday headliners for the 40th annual DeKalb Corn Fest.

Known for hit melodic love songs such as “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not?” and “If I Didn’t Have You,” Keifer and Shawna Thompson are touring the U.S. and have started recording for their third album.

That’s not all that’s exciting in the couple’s lives; they became parents early last year when their son Rigney Cooper was born. A music video for their most recent single, “You Make It Look So Good,” features home videos of the happy family.

Keifer Thompson took a few moments while the band was stopped in Nebraska to speak on the phone with Stephanie Markham of the Daily Chronicle about what fans can expect from Thompson Square’s Corn Fest performance as well as upcoming new music.

Markham: What do you have in store for your show at Corn Fest?

Thompson: We’re in the studio right now, and we’re going to be able to play some brand new songs for you guys that no one has ever heard. We’re really excited about doing that. We should have a single here in a few weeks, and hopefully play some great music for you guys. It’s been quite a while; it’s been too long, and we’ve been asked and asked and asked about new music. We just haven’t been able to do it, and now we can, so we’re going to make up for lost time.

Markham: How has life as musicians changed since becoming parents?

Thompson: It’s been a blessing, honestly. It’s been amazing. It’s calmed us down a lot. It’s made our songwriting better. ... You have a kid to raise now and to provide for, so you have to do your best all the time. You’ve always got to be on top of your game, so it’s really made us quite a bit better in that regard. There’s a lot less partying on the bus than there used to be, but everyone is cool with it. He’s got a bunch of uncles out here that care about him and are always playing with him and stuff, so it’s a nice, welcome change.

Markham: How has the recording process for your new album been going?

Thompson: We’ve been writing forever for it, but we just started recording it, and the first two songs are – it’s completely new. It’s not new territory necessarily for us, but it’s just going to be a little bit new for our fans and for radio and everything. It’s exactly what we want to do. It’s the part of life, the section of life, that we’re in right now. We’re writing about our life and writing about what’s happened to us in the last three years, and it’s just really fun. It’s more fun than we’ve ever had making a record.

Markham: How is the new album going to be different?

Thompson: There’s a lot more honesty in these songs. We really let down our guard, writing some very, very personal stuff. I think honesty is a really big part of it, and we’re letting some influences fly on this record. You’re just going to have to hear it to hear what we’ve been going through for the last few years, and I think it’s definitely going to translate.

Markham: What are interactions with your fans like?

Thompson: We have amazing fans. One thing we’ve recently done is, on Wednesday night at 9 o’clock Central, we do Wino Wednesday. We kind of did it as a joke one night when we were sitting around drinking wine and talking about the business and everything, and we decided to go live on Facebook. Next thing you know, we’ve reached over a million people. We do it every Wednesday now. We’re going to start having writers and artists on there and treating it like a show.

Markham: What is your mindset going in to play an outdoor festival versus a typical show?

Thompson: I would say nothing is typical. They all have their charms, and I like the outdoor festivals myself because it’s a lot of high energy. People come there to party and have a good time. It definitely elevates our energy level on stage. It will be fun to be able to get outside and rock for these people. Man, it’s going to be so much fun.
