Tanzania Development Support sets yard sale

Tanzania Development Support is seeking donations and volunteers for its annual yard sale.

The event will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 to 26. The sale’s new location is at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1915 N. First St. in DeKalb.

The 2016 sales raised more than $8,000 thanks to TDS’s generous donors and the buyers who recognize the TDS garage sale as one of the best around. In addition to being an opportunity to raise money, the event is an enjoyable social experience and an important occasion to learn more about TDS and the impact of educating girls.

Donations of salable items are welcome and appreciated. Email Jeanine at or call 815-901-0393 to arrange a drop-off time. Donations for the yard sale can be dropped off at 201 Thornbrook Road in DeKalb.

TDS also is seeking volunteers to help transport and set up on Aug. 22 and 23 and take down on Aug. 26. To volunteer, email Cynthia Nelson at

TDS is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve the quality of life for youth, especially girls, in the Mara region of Tanzania by supporting primary and secondary school improvements. Education, particularly for girls, provides the tools to escape poverty and improve communities. TDS partners with local people of the Mara region who are committed to the development of their community.

The organization recently funded the construction of a library and community resource center which was completed in June 2016. Current projects include purchasing school books for area students as well as introducing computer literacy to local students and teachers and connecting the library and community resource center to stable Internet.

All proceeds from the yard sale will be used to support the organization’s mission.
