Fargo Home Furnishings opens in downtown Sycamore

SYCAMORE – Fargo Home Furnishings opened its doors in downtown Sycamore for the first time Friday.

The store is on the ground floor of the new apartment complex at 355 W. State St. called Fargo On State Residential Suites.

The building was previously home to the historic Jane Fargo Hotel and was converted into apartments and commercial space by developer John Pappas.

Ronesha Peña, who co-owns the store with her husband Omar Peña, said she was working with another furniture company when Pappas approached her about the possibility of opening her own store at his property.

"I looked at the architecture and the history of the building, and I saw a beautiful little store for the community here, so we agreed," she said. "I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur, so this was a golden opportunity."

The couple lives in Rockford but is looking to move to Sycamore soon, Omar Peña said.

Omar Peña said Friday was the store's "soft opening" to see how things go, and a grand opening will follow in April.

"I’m just looking forward to the opportunity of meeting as many people as I can, building relationships and hopefully just growing the business a little," he said.

The main brand the store carries is Bassett Furniture. It also sells accessories and Corsicana mattresses. Ronesha Peña said they are hoping to grow the store to include more options and styles, similar to furniture stores in big cities.

"My idea was to have a furniture store that [locals] would love and that’s something that will remind them of the city, but they don’t have to go too far," she said.

Ronesha Peña said the store also will feature artwork from local artists and set up example room designs around the paintings.

Rather than sales associates, the store has "design consultants" who will assist customers in choosing furniture and accessories to fit an empty space or an idea, she said.

The store offers financing options as well as front-door delivery or delivery with set-up.
