Genoa car show boasts 1950s-themed activities

GENOA – Genoa Main Street Inc.’s first-ever car and motorcycle show is offering more than just cool cars and motorcycles.

Set for 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, Cruisin’ to Genoa will include a hula hoop contest, raffles for cash and prizes, music, an automotive workshop for kids, face painting and 1950s hair dressing, and some choice vendors. Food and drink specials are available at downtown businesses, and an outdoor showing of “American Graffiti” at 8 p.m. will top off the evening.

“We’ve had a lot of good response,” Main Street director Jen Bristow said. “Barring rain, I think it will be a great show. We still need people to preregister, and we have a drawing for a prize for those who do.”

Advance registration, for $10 per vehicle, is available online at The first 100 registered will receive a dash plaque. On-site registration opens at 2 p.m., and awards will be presented at 7 p.m.

Bristow said trophies will be awarded for top 10, best engine for car and bike, best paint for car and bike, best interior for car, best of show for car and bike, people's choice for car and bike, best chrome for bike, longest distance traveled to show and club with the most entries.

Many downtown businesses have gotten involved with specials, raffles and sponsorships. Genoa Pharmacy is a show sponsor, and Alan Browne Chevrolet is sponsoring the movie, shown at dusk in the parking lot at Main and Genoa streets.

Cruisin’ to Genoa is one of the many events sponsored by Genoa Main Street in support of its mission to preserve Genoa’s heritage and small-town charm while promoting economic development and downtown improvements.
