Genoa plans first downtown car show

GENOA – Genoa Main Street is planning its first Cruisin’ to Genoa car and motorcycle show from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, on Main Street in Genoa.

Organizers believe the show will support Main Street’s mission of preserving Genoa’s heritage and small-town charm while promoting economic development and downtown improvements.

Registration, for $10 per vehicle, is available in advance online at www.genoamainstreet.org. The first 100 registered will receive a dash plaque, and prizes will be awarded for best paint, best engine, best interior, longest distance traveled to the show and more.

Onsite registration starts at 2 p.m. and awards will be presented at 7 p.m. A hula hoop contest is set for 4:30 p.m., and downtown businesses will have food and drink specials throughout the day.

Families are invited to bring their lawn chairs and stay after the show to watch a free showing of “American Graffiti” at 8 p.m. in the parking lot at the corner of Main and Genoa streets. The movie is sponsored by Alan Browne Chevrolet.

Main Street executive director Jen Bristow admits organizers don’t know how many cars to expect.

“We’re getting the word out in a variety of ways, but this is our first year,” Bristow said.

Event chair Darla Woodson said the show has been advertised in a number of ways, including fliers distributed at car shows all over northern Illinois.

“What we really need are volunteers, and people to register their cars and bikes for this event,” Woodson said. “We need people to help with directing traffic, registration, everything.”

Bristow said volunteers don’t have to be Genoa residents or involved with Main Street.

“People who know a little something about car shows would be great,” Bristow said.

Anyone interested in helping is invited to a brief volunteer meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 7 in the community room at Resource Bank, 310 S. Illinois Route 23, Genoa.

For more information or to register a car or bike, visit www.genoamainstreet.org or call Woodson at 815-784-6048. Volunteers unable to attend the meeting can call Woodson, as well.
