DeKALB – Local public safety agencies are teaming up to offer National Night Out, a free community awareness fair, on Tuesday, Aug. 5, in the Target parking lot, 2555 Sycamore Road in DeKalb.

From 5 until 8 p.m., the parking lot will be the site of information and vendor booths, demonstrations, and activities. Visitors can watch self defense and police K-9 demonstrations and meet police officers from the Northern Illinois University, DeKalb and Sycamore police departments and the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, and firefighters with the DeKalb and Sycamore fire departments.

There will be free snacks and games, and booths staffed by such community agencies as the Kishwaukee Family YMCA, Feed’em Soup, Family Service Agency, Adventure Works and more.

Children can learn valuable skills in the fire department smoke house and in the 911 simulation center, where they can safely practice dialing 911 so they are ready in a real emergency.

National Night Back is designed to heighten awareness of crime and drug prevention, generate support for local anti-crime initiatives, strengthen relationships between residents and law enforcement, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized, aware and fighting back.
