DeKALB – A roadside safety check held overnight from July 3 to 4 at Annie Glidden Road north of Lincoln Highway in DeKalb netted one DUI arrest and eight other drug or alcohol-related arrests, according to a news release from the Illinois State Police.

The state police held the check in conjunction with officers from the DeKalb and Northern Illinois University police departments.

Alcohol is involved in nearlly 40 percent of fatal traffic crashes in Illinois. Roadside safety checks are designed to get alcohol-impaired drivers off the roads, but when officers observe other violations, such as people driving with suspended or revoked licenses or violating seat belt laws, they may take enforcement action.

In the DeKalb safety check, officers arrested or cited a total of 39 drivers and issued one written warning.
