SYCAMORE – Two Sycamore High School seniors, Alex Handel and Ashley Yunek, have been awarded the first Wally Thurow scholarships of $500 each.

Funds for establishing the award came from Sycamore-area donors who were friends of the late Wally Thurow. A book, “Mister Pumpkin and the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival,” was published with those funds last year, and proceeds from book sales enabled the scholarship to be created through the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

The two students were selected based on their scholastic accomplishments and their volunteering, which exemplifies Thurow’s life of community service. Handel plans to attend Iowa State University to study environmental sciences. Yunek will attend the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, possibly to study health care administration.
