Katelyn Thurlby of Genoa is the 2014 award recipient of the Palmer Family Music Education Scholarship, administered by the DeKalb County Community Foundation. Thurlby was honored with a $2,500 scholarship award at the June 24 DeKalb Municipal Band Concert at Hopkins Park in DeKalb.

Dee Palmer, director of the DeKalb Municipal Band for 62 years, passed away in November 2011 at the age of 97. His father and grandfather were also former band leaders. Palmer and his family have contributed to the musical pleasure of thousands of people in DeKalb County for more than 160 years. The scholarship was set up in 2009 to honor this local music legacy.

“This year’s 10 scholarship applicants were exceptional,” community foundation spokesperson Becky Zantout said. She added that the selection committee was inspired by the impressive breadth and depth of talent of the applicants, but it made selecting the recipient much more difficult.

Thurlby plans to study music education at Augustana College in Rock Island.

The selection committee is composed of people from various musical backgrounds, representing communities throughout DeKalb County. For more information about donating to the music scholarship or the scholarship application, contact Zantout at 815-748-5383 or becky@dekalbccf.org.
