DeKALB – KishHealth System healthy culinary instructor Jo Cessna will give a presentation on cooking with fresh summer vegetables at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 7, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, 158 N. Fourth St. in DeKalb.
Cessna will use vegetables from a Box of Hope Vegetables Program Box provided by DeKalb County Community Gardens. Afterwards, there will be tastings of the finished dish.
Cessna provides a cooking demonstration using fresh garden vegetables and herbs the first Monday of each month, sponsored by KishHealth System, Live Healthy DeKalb County, and DeKalb County Community Gardens. The cooking and tastings precede the DCCG monthly organizing meeting which takes place at 6:30 p.m. at the same location, immediately after her demonstration. Both are free and open to the public.
"Everyone is invited. You are welcome to just come for the cooking demonstration and everyone is also welcomed to attend the DCCG meeting as well," community gardens executive director Dan Kenney said.
DeKalb County Community Gardens is an innovative approach to increasing access to healthy, locally-grown food for people in need. It is a county-wide, nonprofit, volunteer-driven effort to help address the food insecurity nearly 20 percent of DeKalb County children face every year.
