Where to go for local fireworks displays

Friday, July 4

• Hopkins Park, DeKalb

Food booths open at 2 p.m., and people are encouraged to picnic or to use the park's grills. The pool will be open until 5 p.m. The DeKalb Municipal Band concert begins at 8 p.m. and continues through the fireworks. No alcohol or personal fireworks. Pets are discouraged; people bringing pets must keep them on a short leash and bring supplies for waste disposal. For information, call 815-756-8560.

• Shabbona Lake State Park, Shabbona

Requested donation of $10 per car to watch the fireworks over Shabbona Lake; donations keep the show going year after year. Fireworks start at dusk. For information, visit www.shabbonafireworks.com.

Saturday, July 5

• Sycamore Speedway, Maple Park

Stock car races for all classes begin at 6 p.m., with fireworks after the races. Admission is $5 for ages 6 to 13, $12 for 14 and older.


The day's events at the park begin with a car show from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., tractor show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., flea market, food vendors and carnival at noon, and live entertainment on the stage starting at 1 p.m. Back Country Roads will begin playing at 8 p.m. and will break at 9:30 p.m. for the fireworks show, then resume playing after the fireworks.
