The Robert D. Stearnes Memorial Foundation awarded three $1,000 scholarships and one $500 scholarship to outstanding college-bound students at DeKalb High School's Senior Honors Night on May 21.
This year's recipients of the Stearnes Memorial Scholarships were Kiley McKee, Michael Fagerstrom and Zachary Waller. The Project Breakthrough Scholarship for $500 was awarded to Maggie Rapp.
The Robert D. Stearnes Memorial Scholarships have been given each year beginning in 2000 in memory of Bobby D. Stearnes, a 1986 graduate of DeKalb High School who died in 1998 of a sudden asthma attack at the age of 30. Students receiving these awards must meet the criteria of leadership, scholarship, citizenship and sportsmanship, which are qualities exemplified by Bobby Stearnes throughout his life.
The Project Breakthrough Scholarship is awarded to a student who has demonstrated participation in and commitment to the goal of Project Breakthrough, which is to help create and maintain a welcoming learning environment for all students.
The Robert D. Stearnes Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization that was founded to continue the legacy left by Bobby of giving and making a positive difference in the lives of others.
