Shabbona UCC to take part in tractor pull, planting fest

Published: Tuesday, May 13, 2014 9:31 a.m. CST • Updated: Thursday, May 15, 2014 4:13 p.m. CST

The Shabbona United Church of Christ will participate in the second annual Spring Planting Festival at Lions Park in Paw Paw on May 24.

The festival and tractor pull will take place from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the track next to the park, along Chicago Road. Admission is free.

The event begins with a worship service in the gathering tent. A free-will offering will be taken to support Foods Resource Bank, an agricultural mission helping subsistence farmers around the world by teaching them better farm practices to help solve local hunger in their region of the world.

After the service, there will be a country auction. Donations of crafts, baked goods and other auction items are appreciated. The tractor weigh-in will take place at the same time, so the tractor pull can begin at noon.

In addition to the tractor pull, there will be horse-drawn wagon rides, kids’ pedal pulls, face painting and a petting zoo.

Those who would like to donate, to operate an ag-related activity, or to volunteer to help on the day of the pull should contact Shabbona United Church of Christ Pastor Jim Allen at 815-824-6201.

The cost to compete in the tractor pull is $15. Weigh-in begins at 10:30 a.m. Veteran and first-time pullers are welcome. There will be six competition classes. First, second and third place finishers in each class will receive a medal. For information about competing in the pull, call Doug Bend at 815-739-4789 or visit www.shabbonachurch.com.
