DeKALB – Stage Coach Players presents “Cheaper by the Dozen” May 8-10 and 15-18 at Stage Coach Theater in DeKalb. This comedy, based on the 1948 autobiographical book by Frank Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, is about growing up in a family with 12 children.
Life is never dull with a dozen children in the house. Anne, an attractive high school girl, is a member of a large and unique family whose parents are industrial engineers specializing in motion study. Dad is obsessed with finding the most efficient ways to complete tasks, and uses his big family as case studies. While Dad pushes ahead with better organization for his family, the children don’t understand his methods and Anne rebels. Though the situations are often uproarious, there’s a serious reason behind Dad’s rules. Everything comes to a head in a deft and moving scene in which Dad becomes aware of how much Anne has grown up and she realizes her father’s true intentions.
Anne is played by Cadmium Bound, and Denny Boynton portrays Frank Gilbreth. The rest of the cast includes Maria Boynton, Katie Bansiak, Thomas Phetmeuangmay, Jim Small, Matt Slider, Ashley Parks, Gwynneth Boynton, Maggie Gannon, Cayenne Stephens, Grant Vanlanduyt, Ben Ziegler, John McCue, Sabrina Larson, Carolyn Cannon and Stanley (the family dog).
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. weekdays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. May 18 at the theater, 126 S. Fifth St. in DeKalb.
