Online donations made May 6 get boost from matching grant

Published: Friday, May 2, 2014 12:02 p.m. CDT

On Tuesday, May 6, local residents can join thousands of supporters who care about the work of DeKalb County’s nonprofit community by participating in Give Local DeKalb County.

The DeKalb County Community Foundation is partnering with the DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership to raise support for local nonprofits and grow philanthropy in the community through a 24-hour online day of giving. Donations made online at anytime on May 6 will be amplified with a $20,000 match from the DeKalb County Community Foundation, distributed proportionately based upon donations per organization.

“Since the DeKalb County Community Foundation is celebrating its 20th anniversary, our board of directors thought it was appropriate to provide $20,000 in matching funds to benefit those nonprofit organizations participating in Give Local DeKalb County,”  said  Anita Zurbrugg, program director and organizer of the effort.

Participants can support their favorite participating local charity OR support all nonprofits in DeKalb County by giving to the DeKalb County Community Endowment Fund or the DeKalb County Youth Grantmaker's Fund. Gifts to these funds will support grants to nonprofits across DeKalb County including Community Needs and Youth Engaged in Philanthropy (YEP) grantmaking programs.

This year, 37 nonprofit, 501(c)3 organizations are participating, along with 14 Endowment Funds held at the DeKalb County Community Foundation benefiting local nonprofits. In order to participate, organizations had to be current DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership members. The DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership is a membership-based network of organizations and individuals and businesses that support the nonprofit sector serving DeKalb County.

“We hope to have many more nonprofit organizations participate in Give Local DeKalb County in 2015,” Zurbrugg said.

Give Local DeKalb County is part of Give Local America!, which was established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of community foundations.
