5 Things to Do This Weekend

Published: Thursday, May 1, 2014 2:57 p.m. CDT

 1. Get garden tips. DeKalb County Community Gardeners will give a free workshop at the DeKalb Public Library at 10 a.m. Saturday on basic gardening tips and how to save seeds from this year's harvest to plant next year.

2. Get a free comic. Graham Crackers Comics, 901R Lucinda Ave. in DeKalb (the Village Commons shopping center) will once again give away comic books absolutely free from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Free Comic Book Day. Find other participating locations at www.freecomicbookday.com

3. See what a steel band adds to a symphony orchestra. The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra's spring concert will feature guest artists from the renowned Northern Illinois University Steel Band. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Boutell Memorial Concert Hall, in the NIU Music Building in DeKalb. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors, and $5 for children younger than 12.

4. Go to a party, help a good cause. From 4 pm to midnight Saturday, a pig roast fundraiser at the Genoa Vets Home, 311 Washington St., will help the family of Ethan Slinkard, a local 3-year-old with serious medical problems. Admission is $10, and the event will also have a beer garden, bake sale, 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and live music by The Back Up Plan and Shuvlhed.

5. Have a fiesta. Cinco de Mayo is on a Monday, so Sycamore will celebrate a day early. From 1-9 p.m. Sunday, the Cinco de Mayo festival on Bill Johnson Boulevard (behind the north side of downtown State Street buildings) includes live music, dancers, beer garden, margaritas, food, pinatas, games, a petting zoo, pony rides, contests and more. Admission is free; proceeds from games and activities support local nonprofits.
