Discounts offered for National Bike Month

Published: Tuesday, April 29, 2014 11:34 a.m. CDT

May is National Bike Month. To celebrate, a variety of local businesses will offer discounts to individuals who travel there a bike. You’ll be saving some gas money as well while engaging in a healthy activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Bike riding is a great way to squeeze physical activity into a busy schedule. A 180-pound man will burn 400 calories and a 130-pound woman can burn 300 calories on a 10-mile ride. Biking not only improves your health, but it is also friendly to the environment.

According to the League of American Bicyclists, the average annual operating expense of a bicycle is just $308, versus more than $8,000 for a car, the single largest source of U.S. air pollution. When bicycling is substituted for short auto trips, 3.6 pounds of pollutants per mile are not emitted into the atmosphere.

Visit www.livehealthydekalbcounty.org or find Live Healthy DeKalb County on Facebook to see the May calendar and learn which businesses will participate in National Bike Month Savings.
