Travis Hughes of Genoa, a member of the Genoa-Kingston FFA Chapter, won the State Vegetable Production Award at the State FFA Proficiency Awards Day held April 5 at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign.
Travis is the son of Todd and Mollie Hughes of Genoa. His agriculture education instructor is Annica Hulstedt.
The Vegetable Production Award is one of 52 State FFA Proficiency Awards. Five finalists in each award area advanced through chapter, section and district competition. Travis will receive the award during the Illinois FFA State Convention, June 10-12, at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield. The 2014 Theme is “Planting Your Potential.”
Fifty-two state award winners were selected from over 17,000 FFA members statewide.
Selection of the state award winners is based on a personal interview, size and growth of the FFA member’s Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) and their knowledge of the subject area and career pathway. These awards honor FFA members who have developed specialized skills they can apply to their future careers. SAE awards have three categories: entrepreneurship, placement and research/experimentation.
