DeKALB – Six Northern Illinois University student-athletes were honored at the university’s annual NIU Outstanding Women Student Awards ceremony.

Seniors Cori Frankenburg and Kaylee Heller of women’s soccer, Shelby Miller of softball, Allie Parthie of women’s golf, Justine Schepler of volleyball and Natalie Tarter of track and field all earned recognition for their dedication to their sport and the service they provide to the community.

“This year over 120 students were nominated,” said awards chairperson Judy Santacaterina. “This year, 43 women were chosen representing every college. These six women are truly outstanding, exemplifying remarkable achievement on the playing field, in the classroom and in the community.”

The NIU Outstanding Women Student Awards were created in 1980 to foster the development of leadership among women students. Run by the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women, the honors are given on an annual basis to individuals who demonstrate leadership, community involvement, scholarship and overcoming obstacles in the pursuit of their education.
