Library garden a community effort

Published: Tuesday, May 6, 2014 10:11 a.m. CDT

SYCAMORE - The Sycamore Public Library is embarking on a mission to set up a handicapped-accessible community garden plot on a 1,200-square-foot lot adjacent to the library. A small grant from International Paper has been applied toward building materials for the project; local businesses have donated other supplies.

Members of DeKalb County Community Gardens are sharing their expertise to help the library get started. The library broke ground on Saturday, April 12, with the help of 30 Northern Illinois University students as part of NIU Cares Day.

This endeavor is to be volunteer-run by community members. All who help will reap the benefits of the garden. Any extra food items grown will be donated to local food banks.
