Nelson first joined Cub Scouts in 2002 with Cub Scout Pack 102 chartered by Southeast Elementary School. He earned all five Cub Scout ranks and the Arrow of Light, the highest award given in Cub Scouts. In 2007, he crossed over into Boy Scouts Troop 2 then later transferred to Troop 2810. There he attended numerous campouts and summer camp, and earned 21 merit badges.

Nelson also held various leadership positions including two terms as Senior Patrol Leader, experienced a Boundary Waters High Adventure Trip, and spent more than 42 hours working on his Eagle Project renovating St. Mary’s Cemetery in Maple Park. His project took 235 combined hours of service.

Nelson's Eagle ceremony was held in conjunction with fellow Eagle Scout Alex Handel at Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore. It included the presentation of the Eagle scouts, guest speaker state Rep. Bob Pritchard, presentation of the Eagle Scout Medal, Eagle Scout Badge, Mother’s and Father’s Pins and Mentor’s Pin and concluded with a reception.

Nelson plans to remain active in scouting contributing to Troop 2810.
