Hospice volunteer training

DeKALB—KishHealth System Hospice will offer its spring volunteer orientation and training class at the hospice office, 2727 Sycamore Road in DeKalb. The class is open to anyone interested in becoming KishHealth System Hospice direct care volunteers and those who simply want to learn more about hospice.

Direct care volunteers are a part of an interdisciplinary team serving terminally ill individuals and their families. The goal of the team is to help each person enjoy the best quality of life possible. Important characteristics of direct care volunteers include compassion and flexibility, having the ability to listen, and the desire to make a difference and enrich the lives of others.

The orientation and training will provide an overview of the history and philosophy of hospice. Additionally, it will guide and support class members as they explore issues involved in dying and grieving and help them learn how to respond to the social, emotional, and spiritual needs of the terminally ill and their families.

The training class will be held on Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to noon, from May 13 through June 17. There is a registration fee of $20 to help cover the cost of materials. Scholarships are available. Advance registration by May 6 is required. For more information and to register, call Sue A. Goudy at 815-756-3000. For more information about KishHealth System Hospice, visit www.kishhealth.org.
