DHS hosts high school, college a cappella contests

DeKALB – Over the next three weeks, the DeKalb High School Music Department will host both high school and college events for the International Championship A Cappella Competition.

Organized by Varsity Vocals, the Midwest Semifinal International Championship of High School A Cappella will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22, and the Midwest Quarterfinal of the 2014 International Championship of College A Cappella will be March 8. Both events will be held in the DeKalb High School Auditorium at 7 p.m.

On Feb. 22, eight Midwest High School A Cappella groups will compete for a spot at the ICHSA Finals in New York City.  Michigan State University’s collegiate a cappella ensemble Capitol Green will perform as guest host. DeKalb High School’s a cappella group Enharmonic Fusion will be one of the competing high school ensembles.

The field of competition includes Blends with Benefits, Parkway Central High School, Chesterfield, Mo.; For Ladies Only, Hazelwood West High School, Hazelwood, Mo.; Pitch the Keys, Warrenton High School, Warrenton, Mo.; Wild Scats, Hazelwood West High School, Hazelwood, Mo.; Enharmonic Fusion, DeKalb High School, DeKalb, Ill.; Note Nerdy, The High School of Saint Thomas More, Champaign, Ill.; Voice Activated, Oswego East High School, Oswego, Ill.; and Fusion, Kettering Fairmont High School, Kettering, Ohio.

Enharmonic Fusion is a mixed a cappella group at DeKalb High School that was formed in 2010. They have performed for many organizations and events throughout the community. DHS a cappella ensembles have made four appearances at the ICHSA National Finals, finishing in fourth place in 2010.

This year’s members include Matthew Callahan, Ben Changnon, Samantha Click, Nelle Conley, Destinee Feliciano, Will Ferguson, Eli Hamilton, Rebecca Helmeid, Rachel Hunter-Rosene, Gabe Ihm, Augi Jesmer, Hope Jesmer, Sarah Jesmer, Olivia Johnson-Smith, Ashley Kelly, Grace Klonoski, Emili Maag, Avery Maxwell, Ian Panke, Matt Petersen, Maddie Schneider, Dylan Schweitzer, Evan Taylor, and Adam Wilson.

On March 8, DeKalb High School will host the College A Cappella Midwest Quarterfinal, with six collegiate ensembles competing for a spot in the ICCA Finals in New York City. DeKalb High School a cappella alumnus Adam Welch from the University of Illinois Xtension Chords, The Acafellaz of Illinois State University and DHS’ Enharmonic Fusion will perform as host groups for the event. DeKalb High School a cappella alumnus Eric Changnon will perform as a member of the ISU Acafellaz.

The following college groups will be competing at this event: No Comment, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; No Strings Attached, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign; Purple Haze, Northwestern University; The Illinois Rip Chords, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Voices in Your Head, University of Chicago; and Xtension Chords, University of Illinois.

Tickets may be purchased for either of these events at www.varsityvocals.com and will also be available at the door. Tickets for the ICHSA event on Feb. 22 are $15 general admission and $10 for students. Tickets for the ICCA event on March 8 are $20 for general admission and $10 for students.
