Ryan Finley’s sport is racing.
The Shabbona man drives a late-model truck in races around the region, including Wisconsin and Grundy County. But he’s also a hockey fan, so when he – and his truck – had the chance to spend some time with the Stanley Cup, he wasn’t about to say no.
“That was probably a once-in-a-lifetime deal,” he said.
The truck Finley races is owned by Dan Ahearn of Lombard. Ahearn works in facilities for the United Center, the home of the Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, and worked for the Chicago Stadium before that. After the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup last year, he had a truck designed with a Blackhawks theme.
“We started on the truck the day after the Hawks won the Stanley Cup, which was June 27, and we had it racing on July 8,” Ahearn said. “It was a pretty quick turnaround.”
He credits Midwest Motorsports of Plano, which worked on the truck, with the rapid turnaround.
“It was a long commute (from Lombard to Plano) every day, but it’s worth it when you see the finished product,” he said.
Because of Ahearn’s busy schedule at the stadium, the truck only raced three times last year, but it draws a crowd at every race and show they attend, he said. Finley said the truck’s next appearance will be at the World of Wheels Feb. 28-March 2 in Chicago.
