'Joseph' heads to the Egyptian
DeKALB – Stage Coach Players will present a production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," opening March 13 at the Egyptian Theater, 135 N. Second St. in DeKalb.
"Joseph" is a musical rendition of the Biblical story of a boy blessed with prophetic dreams, his jealous brothers, Egypt’s pharaoh, famine, forgiveness and reconciliation. It is directed by Jan Kuntz with musical direction by Judy O’Connor.
The story, told through narrators Barb McCaskey and Gavin Wilson, is based on the "coat of many colors" story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis and is brought to vibrant life with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice.
His father’s favorite son, Joseph is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams. Sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged. But Joseph is a dreamer. Even when things are going badly he never gives up hope. His dreams help him to survive.
When news of Joseph’s gift to interpret dreams reaches the pharaoh (humorously depicted as Elvis), Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command. Eventually his brothers unknowingly find themselves at the mercy of the brother they no longer recognize. Set to an engaging mix of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock ‘n’ roll, this enduringly popular musical has charmed audiences around the world.
The cast includes Jason Williams as Joseph, Jacob Austin as Pharaoh, Don Austin as Jacob, Lawrence Nepodahl as Potiphar, Paula Tsigalis as Mrs. Potiphar, Todd Toles as Baker, Greg Anderson as Butler, Frank Judd as Reuben, Rudy Espiritu as Simeon, Mike Scorzo as Levi, Ryan Morton as Napthali and featured dancers Ellen Collison and Allison Hunter-Rosene. The Children’s Choir is comprised of members of Huntley Middle School and Clinton Rosette Middle School choirs under the direction of Kim Moorman and Lisa Maxfield.
Performances are at 7:30 p.m. March 13-15 and 2 p.m. March 15 and 16. Tickets are $16.50 for adults, $13.50 for children and $25 for premium seating, and are available online at www.stagecoachers.com. For more information, call 815-758-1940.
