Jim Kanas will headline the Sycamore Music Boosters' "A Note to Remember."

SYCAMORE - Sycamore Music Boosters will welcome guitarist Jim Kanas, Jazz in Progress, and other music ensembles to its sixth annual night of jazz and classical music.

A Note to Remember is scheduled from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Blumen Gardens in Sycamore. In addition to the musical performances, three Sycamore High School alumni will be inducted into the SHS Music Hall of Fame. There will be an elegant sweet and savory hors d’oeuvres buffet, a coffee bar and a raffle and silent auction of more than 50 gifts and prizes.

Three Sycamore High School alumni - Peter Benson, Kara Eubanks, and Lori McMillion Grant - have been chosen as Hall of Fame Legacy Award recipients.

Kanas studied classical music and jazz improvisation. He won consecutive awards as a jazz guitarist in the Chicagoland area, and later pursued his love and hobby of playing bluegrass, folk, and traditional music. Kanas broadened his performance base to include pedal steel guitar, fiddle, banjo, harmonica, mandolin, dobro and vocals, and toured regionally as a sideman with many country-oriented groups. He earned a unique interdisciplinary music performance degree from Northern Illinois University in contemporary guitar skills, commercial music, and American folk instruments. His professional collaborations include recordings and performances with other Midwest musicians such as guitarists Fareed Haque and Muriel Anderson, harmonica/pianist Howard Levy, violinists Johnny Frigo, Randy Sabien and Peter Ostroushko, and bassist Larry Gray. Kanas now spends much time as an artist-in-residence throughout Illinois. He is an Illinois Arts Council Artstour artist and performs and records regularly as a soloist, with the Jim Kanas Trio and with the Jim Kanas Jazz Quartet.

Jazz In Progress formed when local musicians came together in 2012 under the direction of Dave Lehman. It made its public debut in the 2012 Celebration Chorale Salute to the USO concert. It has made a second appearance with the chorale and has played at other local events and venues, including the NIU College of Education Jazz Bistro, the Gavin Wilson Family Variety Show and St. Mary’s Lancer Legacy Ball.

A limited number of tickets are available for this adult-only event at $20 per person. A cash bar will also be available. Tickets are on sale at the Sycamore High School main office, Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists, 3266 Resource Parkway in DeKalb, Kar Fre Flowers in Sycamore, via email at Note2Remember@gmail.com or by calling 815-751-8388.
