Thurow scholarship created from book sale proceeds

SYCAMORE – A Wally Thurow Scholarship Award has been established for graduating seniors at Sycamore High School.

As a result of sale of the Wally Thurow and Sycamore Pumpkin Festival history authored by Tom Oestreicher, funded by donations to the Mr. Pumpkin’s Carvers Club over the past two years, enough money was accumulated to create a scholarship. Additional donations came from the Doug & Lynn Roberts Family Foundation and the Dr. John W. Ovitz, Jr. family trust.

Two $500 scholarship awards will be given each May to a graduating male and female student who have overcome adversity to graduate and who best exemplify the late Wally Thurow’s commitment to their community.

The application form will be available in 2014 from the Sycamore High School office. A panel of three will make the final selections, according to co-chairs Jerry Smith and Barry Schrader, who organized the Mr. Pumpkin’s Carvers Club in memory of Thurow. Honorary co-chairs are Pete Johnson, Sally Stevens, Shirley Hamilton-Nehring and the late Dr. John W. Ovitz, Jr.
