GENOA – The Genoa Kingston Broncos Lightweight football team took first place in the 9U Orange division of the fourth annual Midwest Gridiron Classic football tournament.
More than 80 teams from across the Midwest took part. The Broncos beat the Sterling Warriors in overtime, then defeated the Burlington Panthers in the semi-final game and the Sycamore Junior Spartans in the championship game. This is the first Broncos team to win the DeKalb-based tournament at any level.
The Broncos Lightweight team finished its 2013 season with an overall record of 13-1. They were undefeated throughout the regular season in the Northern Illinois Football Conference (NIFC) Lightweight division, with their only conference loss coming in the NIFC Championship game against the Win-Du-Pec Hornets. Defense was the key to the successful season, and on the year the Broncos racked up a total of 206 points on offense, while their defense only surrendered a total of 66 points.
The Lightweight GK Broncos roster consisted of 16 players: Justyn Ferrara, Nolan Perry, Declan Creadon, Alex Dynek, Dennis Rasmussen, Michael Wendt, Brody Engel, Chase Engel, Ben Franson, Holden Mussato, Josh Kleba, Mason Shannon, William Stewart, Colin Nesler, Aidan Brokaw, and Adrian Rodriguez. The team was coached by Paul Perry, Larry Creadon, Jeff Nesler, Brian Lavender, Dan Brokaw, Bob Baus, and Logan Bankson.
The Genoa Kingston Broncos serves to coordinate youth football and cheerleading within the Genoa, Kingston, and Hiawatha school district boundaries. The Broncos operates as a not-for-profit 501c3 association and is run by volunteers.
