DeKALB – The sounds and aroma of the season will fill the air at Glidden Homestead’s closing day of the tour season on Sunday, Nov. 17, when the Sycamore High School Madrigal Troupe will perform at 1 p.m. in the Welcome Center.

Madrigal singing, brought to England — the Gliddens’ ancestral home – from Italy in the 16th century, was at first an informal type of private entertainment at the castle and country homes of the landed gentry. Frequently, the lords and ladies performed the music as they sat at dinner in the Great Hall. Naturally, during the 12 days of Christmas, there was much entertainment.

The SHS Madrigal Troupe will perform Renaissance-period pieces from this year’s repertoire. Their performance is made possible by a Mary E. Steven Concert and Lecture fund grant to the homestead.

From noon to 4 p.m., visitors can learn what barbed wire, the Northern Illinois University lagoon, and the Family Service Agency have in common in tours of the homestead. Demonstrations of the old-time blacksmith trade will be given in the homestead’s blacksmith shop. Wassail and seasonal refreshments will be served.

Admission is $4 for adults. Children younger than 14 and homestead members are admitted free.

For holiday shopping, unique hand-forged decorator merchandise, DeKalb collectibles, barbed wire items, and a selection of historically-themed books for children will be available in the gift shop.

This holiday event closes the 2013 tour season, which commemorated the 200th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Glidden, “the father of barbed wire” and inventor of “The Winner,” the most widely used barbed wire design in the nation. The 2014 season, The Year of the Barn, will open on Sunday, May 18.

Glidden Homestead is located at 921 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb. For more information, visit www.gliddenhomestead.org or contact info@gliddenhomestead.org or 815-756-7904.
