Jersey auction to help veterans
DeKALB – Special game jerseys worn by the Northern Illinois University Huskies during their Mid-American Conference midweek match-up versus Ball State on Wednesday, Nov. 13, are being auctioned to benefit Active Heroes, a charity that supports veterans, active military and their families.
The Huskies will honor past and active members of the military, police, fire, and other first responders in the Nov. 13 game. NIU will wear one-of-a-kind black jerseys produced by adidas especially for the Huskies, featuring stars on one shoulder and stripes on another. The word “Heroes” will appear on the back of every jersey. The Huskies’ helmet decals for the game will have stars and stripes inside the letters “NIU” within the logo.
Ninety-nine of the jerseys are being auctioned off to the general public. The online auction went live Nov. 1 and ends at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19. Fans can bid on the jerseys at www.niu.activeheroes.org. The only way to obtain an NIU Heroes game jersey is through the NIU Active Heroes Jersey Auction.
Active Heroes provides programs to combat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For more information on the charity, visit www.ActiveHeroes.org.
“Active Heroes is very excited and proud to partner with the NIU Huskies,” said Troy Yocum, founder of Active Heroes. “Our team of veterans is looking forward to being on field for the game and to see the players wearing these amazing jerseys. I know it makes a difference in their lives to see the amount of support for their sacrifices. ”
NIU Head Coach Rod Carey said he and the entire Huskie team are behind the effort.
“We’re excited about the partnership with Active Heroes,” Carey said. “That’s what it’s all about is a chance for us to assist and be involved with this great cause. I want to see all of the jerseys sold, I want people to bid and bid often. It’s a perfect way to help a really worthwhile charity.”
